  • Eight Sizes Available with Leg Dimensions of 3.0 mm, 5.0 mm, 10.0 mm, 12.5 mm, 15.0 mm, 20.0 mm, 25.0 mm, or 50.0 mm
  • Designed for Angles of Incidence (AOI) from 0° to 45°
  • Fabricated from N-BK7 Glass Substrate
  • Designed for Reflections on the Front Surface of the Hypotenuse

Thorlabs offers right-angle prism mirrors with a broadband dielectric coating for the 400 - 750 nm or 750 - 1100 nm wavelength range. They provide an average reflectance of >99% over these ranges (please see the Graphs tab for more info). The mirrors are designed to reflect light that is externally incident on the hypotenuse of the prism (see figure to the right), which has an optical-quality dielectric coated surface (see the Specs tab for details). Right angle prism mirrors featuring metallic and Nd:YAG laser line coatings are also available.

As shown in the images above, there are tooling marks at the right and left edges of the coated hypotenuse. These tooling marks are part of the manufacturing process and do not infringe upon the clear aperture of the mirror (see Specs tab for details).

Please note that reflecting light off of the coated surface from inside the prism is not recommended because of the adhesion layers used in the coating process. As a result, no specifications are given for the polished legs (short sides) of the prism. The triangular surfaces of the prism have a fine ground glass finish.

The top surfaces of our 25.0 mm and 50.0 mm prisms are engraved with the item number for quick identification. The 25.0 mm prisms are also available mounted inside our 30 mm cage cubes.

These plots show the reflectance of our -E02 (400 - 750 nm) and -E03 (750 - 1100 nm) dielectric coatings for a typical coating run. The shaded region in each graph denotes the spectral range over which the coating is highly reflective. Due to variations in each run, this recommended spectral range is narrower than the actual range over which the optic will be highly reflective. If you have any concerns about the interpretation of this data, please contact Tech Support. For applications that require a mirror that bridges the spectral range between the dielectric coatings, please consider a metallic mirror.

Could this product can also serve as Right-Angle Prisms so that we can inject the laser from the cathetus side and direct 90 degrees to another side?

Thank you for reaching out to us with this inquiry Hung. While it seems like this would be a feasible application, we actually have a note on the product overview: "Please note that reflecting light off of the coated surface from inside the prism is not recommended because of the adhesion layers used in the coating process. As a result, no specifications are given for the polished legs (short sides) of the prism....". I have contacted you to discuss your application and possible alternatives.

Dear Thorlabs team. I'm looking for a 45 degree reflective prism mirror, with coated side surfaces in red (700-1100). Is it possible to order such a prism from you ? What would be the delivery time and the price for 4 pieces ? Have a nice day. Kind regards.

Hello Vitalie, thanks for reaching out to Thorlabs. For any custom requests we recommend contacting techsupport@thorlabs.com directly. Unfortunately we do not have a coating designed for this exact range. We have data for the -E03 coating on our Graphs Tab above and at AOI of 45 degrees, the reflection at 700nm is still above 95%. At normal incidence, the coating band is shifted towards longer wavelengths as does not cover 700nm as well. If a wider performance band is needed, metallic mirrors such as gold -M01 coating may be an option. I have reached out directly to discuss your application in more detail.

Can you tell me the damage threshold for the MRA25-E03? Especially for QCW fiber laser running long pulses at 1070nm.
YLohia  (posted 2021-03-25 11:58:21.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. Unfortunately, we don't have formal damage threshold data for these coatings. That being said, perhaps we may be able to provide a comment based on your laser parameters, could you tell us the following parameters? Peak power, Average power, Pulse width, Rep rate, Beam diameter.

Can you please provide information on the polarization phase shift of E03-coated prism mirrors? Can we expect consistent performance in this regard from prisms bought separately at different times, which have undergone different coating runs?
YLohia  (posted 2021-01-19 03:45:51.0)
I have reached out to you directly with the phase delay information of this coating. We expect the phase performance of these mirrors to vary between different production lots over time.

Why is the specified clear aperture so low ("70% of face length and width"), while the dielectric coating seems to extend until the beveled edge of the prism? For example, the 5mm prism has a specified clear aperture of only 3.5mm (height), but the bevels in the technical drawing seem to be only 0.25mm on each side so it would seem that the coated part of the mirror face is at least 4.5mm. What makes that we cannot use the outer parts of the coated area?
YLohia  (posted 2018-07-03 10:28:44.0)
The mirrors are laid out flat on two rails in the coating chamber with the surface being coated facing downwards and making contact with the rails. These rails are ~0.5mm thick each and cannot be placed on the beveled edges of the mirror surface. So now, the remaining clear aperture is 5 mm - 2*0.25 mm - 2*0.50 mm = 3.5 mm at best, which is the 70% spec. Please contact techsupport@thorlabs.com if you have further questions.

Hello, I'm using micro-prisms for my research (Ca-Imaging in the brain). Typically these prisms are very tiny (0.2-1 mm length). Would it be possible to take up such small prisms (dielectric or metallic) into your catalog? And I would have another suggestion for an additional product: GRIN Lenses. Currently, the ones you carry are mainly useful for fiber coupling. However, recently people have been starting to do a lot of micro-endoscopy in the brain using GRIN lenses as relay to bring an image plane from deep within the brain to the surface (e.g. Mark Schnitzer and his Inscopix company). While the original lenses are from GRINTECH, GoFoton also now manufactures GRIN lenses for imaging applications. Usually the required lenses would be able to bring a imaging plane of 200 µm in front of one side up to the second side of a lens, which is typically 3,5 or 7 mm long. The wavelengths used are in the blue for excitation and green for emission. If you were to approach GoFoton, they will know which lenses I'm talking about. Maybe they'd be happy to find a distributor. Best, Michael

Hello Michael, thank you for your detailed feedback. I will reach out to you directly about our custom capabilities for prisms. As for the GRIN lenses, I have posted your idea in our internal engineering forum. Thank you for the suggestion.
