These Variable Polarization Beamsplitter Kits are based on Thorlabs' FT-51X60 Multi-Axis FiberBench. A PM fiber can be attached to the input FiberPort, which collimates the output. The FiberPorts included with these kits have wide key slots. The polarization of this beam is then rotated with a half-wave plate. By changing the orientation of the wave plate, the ratio of the vertical to horizontal State of Polarization (SOP) is changed, which then affects how much signal is transmitted and reflected through the polarizing beamsplitter cube.

These beamsplitters have extinction ratios of >1000:1 (TP:TS). The average p-component transmission is >90% while the average s-component reflectance is >99.5% for each beamsplitter. Please see the Graphs tab for more information. The split ratio is continuously variable from 0 to 30 dB and is dependent on the polarization extinction ratio from the input PM fiber and the spectral line width when Δλ ≤ 3 nm.

Assembly
These kits include all the hardware needed for assembly and adjustment. To assemble, insert the dowel pins of the half-wave plate and beamsplitter module into the desired slots on the FiberBench; lock their positions using the 2-56 set screws and 0.9 mm hex key. The beamsplitter cube can be aligned using four 0.050" hex adjustment screws, which can then be locked in place using their locking collars and the included SPW403 spanner wrench. The X, Y, and Zθ adjusters for each FiberPort also accept the 0.050" hex key. The sensitivity of the X and Y adjusters can be varied using the two holes located on the faceplate of the FiberPorts and the 0.028" hex key. The orientation of each FiberPort may be locked using the included 0-80 locking screws and the 0.050" hex key. Care must be taken when locking the FiberPort to avoid misalignment or damage. In most cases locking is not required. Please reference the FiberPort Manual for instructions. The rotation of the half-wave plate may be locked using the screw located at the top of the wave plate and the 0.050" hex key.

Hello! Since we already had waveplates that come with the polarization beamsplitter ket, we decided to order the different components (except the waveplates abd beamsplitter) to build the bench ourselves. However, only after receiving the components we realized that we should have ordered dust-covers along with it. The U-bench cover that came with FVC-1550-APC does not fit on the assembled PFS-FFT-1x2-1550. Do you have any suggestions? Or link for dust-covers for PFS-FFT-1x2-1550? Thank you, and best regards.

hello! I wanted to ask if it is straightforward to assemble this polarization beamsplitter kit if we have all the components (namely 1xFT-51X60, 3 x PAF2-2C, 3 x HCA3-SM1, FBT-PBS054 and FBR-AH3)? I am asking this because we already have some of these components, and wouldn't want to buy the whole kit then.

Hello Preeti, thanks for reaching out to Thorlabs. Yes we do list all of the components from these kits separately in our catalogue so it is fairly straightforward to assemble. Aligning the FiberPorts for optimal coupling is its own process and, even with the kits, alignment is necessary upon install. Our main FiberPort page has videos from Thorlabs' YouTube page detailing the alignment procedure using the 5 adjustment screws of the port. I have reached out directly to discuss this in further detail.

Thank you for reaching out to us with this inquiry! On the mechanical drawings, we state: 8-32 HOLES, USED FOR MOUNTING WALL PLATES SOLD SEPARATELY. In this case, the wall plate mentioned here would be something like HCA3. I have contacted you directly to discuss the options available.

If using this as a splitter, the polarization will be opposite on the two fibers, correct? In many situations, it would be nice if both of the output fibers had the same, standard (slow-axis) polarization. Is it possible to rotate the key of the port to rotate the polarization by 90 degrees? Or would it be necessary to use a second waveplate? Thanks!

Hello, the FBR-AH2 half-waveplate in the PFS-FFT-1X2-780 is the limiting factor (wavelength range: 700 - 1200 nm) for 633 nm operation. If you already have this part, you can obtain 633 nm operation by replacing the FBR-AH2 with the FBR-AH1. Custom wavelength configurations for these parts can be requested by clicking the "Request Quote" button above or by contacting your local Thorlabs Tech Support team (in your case, europe@thorlabs.com).

A response from Adam at Thorlabs: I can provide you with more information and will make sure that the website is updated to include this information. The PBS cubes are designed to transmit the P component and reflect the S component. The P component has a tranmission > 96% and a reflection 98%. The extinction ratio of the transmitted P-component and reflected S-component is > 1000:1.
