These 60 mm cage plates allow the user to assemble and connect a custom optical system to certain components of a Cerna microscope, upright Nikon Eclipse microscope, inverted Nikon Eclipse Ti or Ti2 microscope, Olympus BX or IX microscope, or Zeiss Axioskop microscope. Cage System Overview

The Cage Assembly System provides a convenient way to construct large optomechanical systems with an established line of precision-machined building blocks designed for high flexibility and accurate alignment.

16 mm, 30 mm, and 60 mm Cage System Standards

Thorlabs offers three standards defined by the center-to-center spacing of the cage assembly rods (see image below). The 16 mm cage, 30 mm cage, and 60 mm cage standards are designed to accommodate Ø1/2", Ø1", and Ø2" optics, respectively. Specialized cage plates that allow smaller optics to be directly inserted into our larger cage systems are also available.

Standard Threads

The flexibility of our Cage Assembly System stems from well-defined mounting and thread standards designed to directly interface with a wide range of specialized products. The three most prevalent thread standards are our SM05 Series (0.535"-40 thread), SM1 Series (1.035"-40 thread), and SM2 Series (2.035"-40 thread), all of which were defined to house the industry's most common optic sizes. Essential building blocks, such as our popular lens tubes, directly interface to these standards.

Cage Rods 16 mm These rods are used to connect cage plates, optic mounts, and other components in the cage system. The SR Series Cage Rods are compatible with our 16 mm cage systems, while the 30 mm and 60 mm cage systems use ER Series Cage Rods.

Introduction to Microscope Dovetails

Dovetails are used for mechanical mating and optical port alignment of microscope components. Components are connected by inserting one dovetail into another, then tightening one or more locking setscrews on the female dovetail. Dovetails come in two shapes: linear and circular. Linear dovetails allow the mating components to slide before being locked down, providing flexible positioning options while limiting unneeded degrees of freedom. Circular dovetails align optical ports on different components, maintaining a single optical axis with minimal user intervention.

Thorlabs manufactures many components which use dovetails to mate with our own components or those of other manufacturers. To make it easier to identify dovetail compatibility, we have developed a set of dovetail designations. The naming convention of these designations is used only by Thorlabs and not other microscope manufacturers. The table to the right lists all the dovetails Thorlabs makes, along with their key dimensions.

In the case of Thorlabs’ Cerna® microscopes, different dovetail types are used on different sections of the microscope to ensure that only compatible components can be mated. For example, our WFA2002 Epi-Illuminator Module has a male D1N dovetail that mates with the female D1N dovetail on the microscope body's epi-illumination arm, while the CSS2001 XY Microscopy Stage has a female D1Y dovetail that mates with the male D1Y dovetail on the CSA1051 Mounting Arm.

To learn which dovetail type(s) are on a particular component, consult its mechanical drawing, available by clicking on the red Docs icon (Docs Icon) below. For adapters with a female dovetail, the drawing also indicates the size of the hex key needed for the locking setscrew(s). It is important to note that mechanical compatibility does not ensure optical compatibility. Information on optical compatibility is available from Thorlabs' web presentations.

For customers interested in machining their own dovetails, the table to the right gives the outer diameter and angle (as defined by the drawings below) of each Thorlabs dovetail designation. However, the dovetail's height must be determined by the user, and for circular dovetails, the user must also determine the inner diameter and bore diameter. These quantities can vary for dovetails of the same type. One can use the intended mating part to verify compatibility.

In order to reduce wear and simplify connections, dovetails are often machined with chamfers, recesses, and other mechanical features. Some examples of these variations are shown by the drawings below.

If a DIY Cerna component does not have one of the standard interfaces in the table, it is not listed here. Please note that mechanical compatibility does not ensure optical compatibility. These Cage Plates feature a D1N dovetail to connect to select Nikon and Cerna microscope systems. They are designed to integrate the Cerna platform with our SM30 (M30.5 x 0.5) lens tube, SM2 (2.035"-40) lens tube30 mm cage, and 60 mm cage construction systems, making them ideal for creating custom widefield viewing and epi-illumination apparatuses.

The LCPN2, LCPN3, and LCPN4 Cage Plates feature a male D1N dovetail that connects to certain Cerna components, an inverted Nikon Eclipse Ti trinocular port, or an upright Nikon Eclipse trinocular port. The LCPN3 also has a female D5Y dovetail to be used with Olympus trinoculars that have a male D5Y dovetail. The LCPN2 and LCPN3 cage plates have a clear aperture of Ø1.10" (Ø27.9 mm) and feature internal SM30 (M30.5 x 0.5) threads with a depth of 0.76" (19.3 mm) and 0.48" (12.2 mm), respectively. This allows for cage mounting of Ø30 mm optics and other SM30-threaded components, such as SM30 lens tubes; two SM30RR retaining rings are provided to secure an optic in each adapter. The LCPN4 cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.74" (44.3 mm) and features internal SM2 (2.035"-40) threads with a depth of 0.45" (11.4 mm) for the cage mounting of Ø2" optics (one SM2RR retaining ring included) along with SM2-threaded components, such as SM2 lens tubes. We also offer the CSA1003 unthreaded cage plate with a female D1N dovetail. It is 0.73" (18.5 mm) thick with a clear aperture of Ø1.50" (38.1 mm), and can connect to any Cerna component with a male D1N dovetail. 

Each cage plate has four Ø6 mm cage rod through holes with side-located locking setscrews (5/64" [2 mm] hex) to secure it within a 60 mm cage system, allowing for the construction of custom microscope systems. Additionally, the LCPN2 has four 4-40 taps on 30 mm centers on the opposite side of the dovetail to mount 30 mm cage systems.

The CSN110 Cage Plate utilizes a male D1T dovetail to connect to our CSA1400 Mounting Arm (sold separately), allowing for a single microscope objective to be mounted into a DIY Cerna system. The adapter has a clear aperture of Ø1.20" (30.5 mm) and features internal M32 x 0.75 threads with a depth of 0.41" (10.4 mm) for use with M32 x 0.75-threaded microscope objectives. Please note that we also offer microscope thread adapters to convert to other industry-standard objective threads. Four through holes with side-located locking setscrews (5/64" [2 mm] hex) allow for the attachment of Ø6 mm cage rods for 60 mm cage systems. Additionally, the side opposite the dovetail has 4-40 tapped holes on 30 mm centers for 30 mm cage systems.

The LCPZ1 Cage Plate allows custom condenser configurations to be attached to a Zeiss Axioskop microscope. The adapter utilizes a male D1Z dovetail to connect to the condenser holder of the microscope; see the Microscope Dovetails tab for details.

The LCPZ1 cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.58" (Ø40.1 mm) and features internal SM2 (2.035"-40) threads with a depth of 0.40" (10.1 mm) for Ø2" lens tubes or other optics; one SM2RR retaining ring is included to secure a Ø2" flat optic inside the adapter. The LCPN6 Cage Plate features a female D2N dovetail and internal SM1 (1.035"-40) threads for Ø1" Lens Tubes. Please note that the SM1 threading is not deep enough to mount optics. The cage plate is 0.50" (12.7 mm) thick with a clear aperture of Ø1.01" (Ø25.6 mm). Four through holes, each with a side-located locking setscrew (5/64" [2 mm] hex), can be used to attach Ø6 mm cage rods for 60 mm cage systems. The adapter also includes additional 4-40 tapped holes for 30 mm cage systems on the opposite side of the dovetail.

The LCPN6 adapter is designed to allow our TC1X camera tube and Nikon camera tubes with a male D2N dovetail to be integrated into user-built optomechanical assemblies from Thorlabs components. The adapter utilizes a female D2N dovetail to connect to the camera tube, which can then be incorporated into a custom microscope system using SM1 threading, a 30 mm cage system, or a 60 mm cage system. Additionally, the LCPN6 adapter can be used with other male D2N dovetail components, such as the SM1A58 camera port adapter (sold above), to provide a quick-release mechanism for SM1-to-SM1, SM1-to-30 mm cage, and SM1-to-60 mm cage coupling.

The LCPZ2 Cage Plate allows custom widefield viewing setups to be attached to a Zeiss Axioskop microscope. This adapter utilizes a male D2Z dovetail adapter to connect to the trinocular port of the microscope; see the Microscope Dovetails tab for details. This adapter can only be attached by first removing the microscope's trinoculars (see image to the right).

The LCPZ2 cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.58" (Ø40.1 mm) and features internal SM2 (2.035"-40) threads with a depth of 0.40" (10.1 mm) for Ø2" lens tubes; one SM2RR retaining ring is included to secure a Ø2" flat optic inside the adapter. Through holes with side-located locking setscrews (5/64" [2 mm] hex) can be used to attach Ø6 mm cage rods for 60 mm cage systems.

The LCPN5 cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.50" (Ø38.1 mm) and features internal SM2 (2.035"-40) threading with a depth of 0.45" (11.4 mm) for SM2 lens tubes (one SM2RR retaining ring is included). Both adapters have four through holes with side-located locking setscrews (5/64" [2 mm] hex) that can be used to attach Ø6 mm cage rods for 60 mm cage systems. Additionally, the LCPN1 adapter features 4-40 tapped holes on 30 mm centers, located on the side opposite the dovetail, which can be used for 30 mm cage systems.

The LCPY2 Cage Plate features a male D5Y dovetail to connect to the trinocular port of Olympus BX or IX microscopes. It is designed to attach custom widefield viewing and image detection setups to the trinocular port of the microscope. The cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.10" (Ø27.9 mm) and features internal SM30 threading with a depth of 0.80" (20.2 mm) for Ø30 mm lens tubes; two SM30RR retaining rings are included to secure an optic inside the adapter. 

The LCPY3 and LCPN3 Cage Plates feature a female D5Y dovetail to connect to the trinoculars of an Olympus microscope, which allows integration with DIY Cerna microscope systems. The LCPN3 also has a male D1N dovetail on the side opposite the female D5Y dovetail, allowing for integration with the trinocular port on an Upright Nikon Eclipse, Nikon Eclipse Ti, Nikon Eclipse Ti2, or Cerna Microscope. The LCPY3 cage plate is unthreaded with a clear aperture of Ø1.26" (Ø32.0 mm). The LCPN3 cage plate has a clear aperture of Ø1.10" (Ø27.9 mm) and features internal SM30 (M30.5 x 0.5) threading with a depth of 0.48" (12.2 mm) for cage mounting of Ø30 mm optics and other SM30-threaded components, such as SM30 lens tubes (two SM30RR retaining rings are included).

All three adapters have four through holes with side-located locking setscrews (5/64" [2 mm] hex) for connecting to a 60 mm cage system. The LCPY2 and LCPY3 adapters also have 4-40 tapped holes on 30 mm centers, located on the side opposite the dovetail, for compatibility with 30 mm cage systems.

Additionally, the LCPY2 can be directly connected to the LCPY3 and LCPN3 using the male and female D5Y dovetails, respectively, providing a means to attach two seperate cage systems using dovetails.
